Apples
We have the most glorious apple tree in our garden and it’s fruit is simply delicious but however many times we have tried to store indoors our apples always rot! We now pickle, jam and freeze them. Frozen apple can be used in sauces, pies and puddings and many more dishes.
Freezing apples is a great way to preserve them for use in your favourite recipes throughout the year. Whether you plan to make apple pie, apple sauce, or simply want to enjoy the fruit as a snack, freezing apples is an easy and convenient option.
To freeze apples, start by washing and peeling them. Then, slice the apples into wedges or cubes and toss them in lemon juice to prevent browning. Next, spread the apple pieces out on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and place it in the freezer. Once the apple pieces are frozen, transfer them to an airtight container or freezer bag and store them in the freezer for up to 12 months. When you're ready to use the frozen apples, simply thaw them in the refrigerator overnight before adding them to your recipe.
Frozen apples work well in baked goods like pies and muffins, and can also be added to oatmeal, yogurt, or smoothies for a quick and healthy breakfast. Overall, freezing apples is a great way to enjoy this delicious fruit all year round. So next time you have a surplus of apples, consider freezing them for later use!
Preparation
Dessert Apples
Wash, peel (if you wish) and core. Then dice or slice as to your preference into a solution of water and lemon juice.
Cooking Apple
Same as above in that you wash the fruit, peel (if you wish) and slice or chop or cut into rings as to your preference. I would personally blanch a cooking apple for 1 minute before freezing. If you do this then drain them and cool and dry.
Apple Puree
If you do want to cook the apple before freezing, then do so as you would normally. You can cook with or without sugar and with a little water. Make sure this is cold before freezing.
Packaging
Pack in labelled and dated freezer containers. Place in a syrup if you desire.
Thawing
Thaw in unopened containers for one hour at room temperature.
Storage Time
12 months.
